- Subject: 1750 Hz tone generator in Yaesu ft-26?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Hi everyone.
- I am living in Europe and using an American model 2-meter
- handheld (Yaesu ft-26).
- Over here, one needs a 1750 Hz tone burst to open the repeaters.
- Does anyone know if there is a mod to transform a US version ft-26 -> European
- version (with built in tone generator to open the receptors)
-
-
- Thanks for any help.

-
- There are several ways to deal with this.
- 1. Move to a different frequency.
- 2. Use directional antennas to reduce or eliminate the interference.
- 3. Have your QSOs when the repeater is not so active.
-
- >
- >This repeater uses 146.535 as an input. Both 147.555 and 146.535 are listed

-
- I have heard that for many years there have been no available
- frequency pairs for repeaters on 2 meters in Southern California.
- Therefore, if more repeaters are to be put on the air, some
- underutilized simplex frequencies could be used. Since no one has
- a "right" to a particular frequency, any interference problems that
- arise would have to be dealt with among the affected parties.

- >Do the "suggested" Band Plans have any meaning any more?! What next: FM
- >packet nodes on 144.200 or CW QSOs on repeater inputs?
-
- As our bands become more populated, flexibility and understanding will
- become watchwords for dealing with the inevitable interference problems.
- The ARRL band plans are nothing more than suggestions for utilizing our
- available spectrum. The FCC dictates what modes can be used on a
- particular band of frequencies - after that, it is up to us to use the
- spectrum in efficient ways. In some parts of the country, the ARRL band
- plan may work well, but in other parts of the country, perhaps not.

- >every Ham have a right to have his own repeater? With our crowded,

-
- The reality is that many, if not most people that are active on 2 meters
- are using hand-held transceivers with small antennas. Except for close
- proximity situations, simplex operation is just not as effective or
- practical as communicating through a repeater system.
-
- >

- Good luck.

-
- SAREX Contact on Satcom C1 Satellite Downlink
-
- Those who wish to see a SAREX school group contact in action and have
- access to a C-band TVRO dish will have a special treat later today.
- The Step/STAR Schools Young Astronaut group, located in Spokane, Washington,
- will talk to the space shuttle astronauts through a special telebridge link
- which is expected to begin at appoximately 18:10 UTC. This contact will be
- broadcast live via the Satcom C1 satellite on transponder 18. C1 is also
- designated F1 and is located at 137 degrees West Longitude.
-
- School Group Status
-
- 8 of the 10 planned school group contacts have now been successfully completed.
- The Springfield Plains Elementary, in Clarkston, Michigan had an outstanding
- 9 minute contact with mission specialist Jerry Linenger, KB5HBR. 26 questions
- were asked by the students during this event. Reports from the coordinators
- at all the schools have been thankful of the outstanding educational program
- that SAREX provides the students. At the Crystal Lake South Elementary school
- in Illinois, the students got an "elementary" demonstration of circular
- polarization. The technical team at the school demonstrated to the students
- that left hand polarization of their antenna provided up to a 4 S unit
- improvement in the signal over right hand circular polarization for some
- portions of the pass over the Chicago area. Chalk up another one for SAREX
- volunteer ingenuity!
-
- General Voice and Packet QSOs
-
- We have gotten several reports from radio amateurs and the shuttle crew that
- general voice QSOs are being made. Please remember that the astronauts
- are not awake around the clock. Their 8 hour sleep period ends at 11:22 UTC
- on 9/14, at 9:52 UTC on 9/15, at 10:22 on 9/16 & 9/17 and at 9:52 UTC on 9/18.
- Also, as I reported at the beginning of this flight, Shuttle power
- conservation measures, required to support an extra (10th) day of flight, has
- resulted in no packet radio operation to date. It is hoped that the packet
- system will be turned on later in the flight. The SAREX team will keep you
- posted. Please remember to listen on the downlink frequency (145.55 MHz) for
- the packet activity BEFORE sending packet connects to the Space Shuttle.

-
- PLEASE don't do this. Yes, your new license will say "Tech
- Plus." Yes, carrying around your Tech license does not imply
- you passed 5 wpm. A pain? Yes. Need to carry that CSCE...
-
- But every application sent in to the FCC uses government

- good reasons to send it in - like actually upgrading, or

-
- Imagine if all the Tech Pluses sent in new 610's at the
- same time, asking for "Tech Plus" pieces of paper...
-
- What the FCC should AUTOMATICALLY do is send out a new
- "Tech Plus" license to EVERY Tech Plus, except that there

- Subject : Re: HPM Lesson?
-
- I worked 20 meter phone a LOT last weekend, and only landed 22 contacts. I
- heard almost nothing on 15 meters and 10 meters, and a club member had
- borrowed our straight key. As it happened, I contacted very few people east
- of the Mississippi.
-
- At any rate, I contacted another three people last night and today. Although
- I had originally been hoping to work all states in the celebration, I decided
- that I had put more than enough time into the contest, and called it quits
- after I got my 25 contacts.
-
- For next time, however, the lure of running the pileups might be enough for
- me to volunteer for the ARRL and sign /whatever.
